Possible interpretations
Household income is the most used measure to estimate consumption potential, but it must be evaluated in conjunction with the others.
High-income people living alone may even consume less than average or large middle class families.
As well as young adults, they are investing in education, means of transportation, their own homes and children, while the elderly may be in a more stable financial phase and with lower consumption.
Higher income families can invest in business, education, and consume more refined items. Lower-income families, on the other hand, are more dependent on public services and financial aid.
Mapfry organized income classes by minimum wage bracket.
This criterion follows the most common breaks among Brazilian families and not ABEP standard (Brazilian Association of Research Firms).
ABEP estimates income from the possession of assets and developed this format to estimate people's income without having to ask them directly, something that can even be embarrassing.
But the survey carried out by the IBGE asks directly about income, which allows us to work with the most representative breaks and compare with the methodologies of other institutes, such as FGV and Locomotive, for example.
Methodology
This is a survey carried out by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) in 2010 Demographic Census and updated by Mapfry based on more recent indicators, such as PNAD And the Population Estimates.
The methodology for updating the indicators takes into account the different characteristics of Brazilian cities that imply specific demographic dynamics.
